World Entertainment Friday, Week 40
Weekly selection of somewhat unusual music from around the world
From the darkest corners of YouTube, here are some songs that you’re unlikely to ever hear on FM radio.
If you know something that would fit in, let me know in the comments.
Artist: Kruuv
Title: Laimjala labajalg
Country: Estonia
Year: 2015
Laimjala is a village on the Saaremaa island; labajalg is a sort of folk dance; some sites suggest it’s «flatfoot waltz» but I know too little about dancing generally and folk dances in particular to see if that adds any clarity.
Artist: Delkhii
Title: Water
Country: Mongolia
Year: 2021
Not sure how to classify this… «ambient folk»?
Artist: Отава Ё (Otava Yo)
Title: Яблочко (Yablochko, Little Apple)
Country: Russia
Year: 2017
Yablochko is a traditional Russian naval song (also a dance, not shown here) of either Moldovan or Scottish/Irish origin, or possibly both. It spread widely during the Russian Civil War, and multiple politically colored versions exist. This is the «Red» version. (English translation in the subtitles is, er, very approximate.)
Such nice Friday offerings! I just got a Swedish massage that was combined with a sound bath, but next time I want ambient water playing! And the woman in the last video has a beautiful smile.
I love the song by Kruuv. It was very pretty and the Russian song was fun. The Mongolian song wasn’t bad either. Good choices this week.
