WEF (World Entertainment Friday), Week 26
Weekly selection of somewhat unusual music from around the world
From the darkest corners of YouTube, here are some songs that you’re unlikely to ever hear on FM radio.
If you know something that would fit in, let me know in the comments.
Artist: Batuko Tabanka
Title: Brinca kumí (Play With Me)
Country: Cape Verde
Year: 2011
Caboverdian batuko is a rhythmical pattern that gives name to a whole genre of song and dance. It’s occasionally spelled batuque (Portuguese for ‘drum’), causing confusion with a number of Brazilian things which are not directly related, just also involve drumming.
Artist: Villagers of Ioannina City
Title: Karakolia
Country: Greece
Year: 2014
This is either «stoner folk rock» or «folk stoner rock». I’m not an expert in the stoner part of the equation but they seem to be having a good time. It’s also considerably more complex music than you’d expect from stoners but that’s probably Greek progrock influence (consider e.g. Aphrodite’s Child).
Artist: Sayin-Kherel Opey & Kezhik Uspun
Title: Uvan-Shu (?)
Country: Russia (Tuva)
Year: 2021
Not sure of the translation but it’s known to be a traditional folk song, so it shouldn’t mean anything rude.
Happy Friday if you made it this far!
Rat, this series is one of your best ideas.
This first one from Cape Verde was pretty. The Russian one was cool. I did love Greece’s version of rock.
